Southampton could re-sign Danny Ings as West Ham United exit development emerges

West Ham United striker, Danny Ings could be set to complete a return to Southampton after only six months at the London Stadium, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper reported on July 20 (page 12), that the Hammers are increasingly close to signing Chelsea forward Armando Broja as David Moyes attempts to improve his frontline, as the Scotsman is unsatisfied with his current attacking options.

All three of the Irons’ current striking options have been linked with moves away from East London, with Michail Antonio rumoured to be catching the eye of Al-Ettifaq and Gianluca Scamacca openly expressing his desire to return to Italy with Roma his most obvious destination.

However, the expectation is that there is no chance that the Irons will allow all three of their forwards to depart in one window, and with Scamacca and Antonio appearing closer to the exit door this summer, it is likely it will be Ings who remains at the London Stadium.

Too good for the Championship

Since joining Moyes’ side in January, Ings hasn’t managed to hit the same vein of form that fans of the Premier League have become used to during his time with Southampton and Aston Villa, but that doesn’t mean he should be written off.

In his first 17 Premier League matches in East London, Ings only managed to score two goals and assisted another two but he also managed to find the net on another six occasions for Aston Villa before making the switch at the start of 2023.

West Ham

But Ings is a striker that has managed to be capable of scoring an important amount of goals in mid-table sides that have allowed the likes of Villa to push for Europe and arguably keep Southampton safe from relegation at times. His record is far too good to see him drop to the Championship at only 30-years-old.

Depth will be a necessity for Moyes’ side this season., with the Europa League on the agenda once more, someone who is as reliable as Ings for a consistent, if unspectacular, goal return could be crucial in ensuring West Ham have a more successful domestic campaign that last year.
