West Ham make approach to sign Mateus Fernandes, Southampton’s response revealed

West Ham United are continuing to pursue midfielders in the transfer window.

Graham Potter looks keen to improve his options in the middle of the park, with multiple players linked with a move to the London Stadium to remedy this.

Douglas Luiz has been linked with a move to the Hammers from Juventus, with the Brazilian being able to play deeper in midfield.

More attacking options are also being evaluated, with Harvey Elliott and Romano Schmid being two of the names mentioned, but it has emerged that West Ham are also keen on bringing Mateus Fernandes to E20.

West Ham enquire for Fernandes amidst interest from abroad

Given Lucas Paqueta’s uncertain future in East London and his drop-off in form, investing in another attacking midfielder would seem like a wise move.

In step, Fernandes.

The 21-year-old was a rare beacon of light for Southampton in their dismal Premier League campaign, in which they could only manage to amass 12 points.

Fernandes’ attacking output was very good when considering the team he was in last season.

According to The Sun’s Jack Rosser on X (July 29), West Ham have enquired about the midfielder’s services to Southampton, despite the youngster only joining the Saints last summer.

The Hammers are said not to have been given encouragement over a move, whilst Atletico Madrid are one of the other clubs who are considering signing Fernandes.

West Ham must go all out for Harvey Elliott instead

With Southampton appearing to play hardball, the Hammers must go all in for Harvey Elliott instead.

With the Premier League champions in the hunt for Alexander Isak, they may well need to make some sales to free up the funds to bring the Swedish international to Anfield.

Elliott is evidently not favoured by Slot, making just two Premier League starts last season for the Reds.

But moving to West Ham, where he would be Potter’s main man, may be the thing to unlock the 22-year-old’s true potential.

Bringing in a player of Elliott’s quality may also help Callum Wilson thrive in a claret and blue shirt, with Elliott providing quality service to Wilson, who appears to be joining Potter’s side on a free transfer.
