Maxwel Cornet in West Ham exit drama as new club forced to remove video

Maxwel Cornet has been a forgotten figure at West Ham despite the hope that surrounded him when he signed in 2022.

Cornet spent the first half of last season on loan with Southampton, where he struggled for gametime, before being loaned to Genoa.

The Ivory Coast international managed just one goal in 21 appearances for the Hammers, and has been a waste of wages.

Cornet’s signing is a mark of just how bad David Sullivan’s judgment has been over the years, and he was nearly stuck on the books after some deadline day drama

Maxwel Cornet signs for Genoa after announcement confusion

West Ham’s deadline day set out to be a strong one after Nayef Aguerd’s £19.9million London Stadium departure had supporters hoping they were going to spend that money elsewhere.

However, the funds have gone towards balancing the books and making sure the Irons are abiding by Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Nevertheless, deadline day started off in an exciting way, with big names such as Manuel Akanji being linked with West Ham, but the day gradually faded out.

West Ham hijacked Crystal Palace’s move for Igor Julio, but there was plenty more outgoings than incomings.

Cornet’s departure caused a stir, with the forward rejoining Genoa on loan.

The Italian side had posted an announcement for the signing before quickly deleting it, with uncertainty regarding whether the deal was completed in time.

According to Football Italia, the reason behind the delay was a technical problem with the Lega Serie A registering system, and Genoa were assured the deal had gone through.

Genoa have an option to buy Cornet next summer, and supporters will be hoping that they exercise it as it will save them plenty of money.

West Ham can save £6.7m from Maxwel Cornet sale

Cornet is currently on £65,000 a week in East London. Therefore, his loan move to Genoa will save the Hammers £3.35million in wages between now and the end of the season.

That equates to £6.7m across the two years remaining on his contract, which West Ham will save should he leave permanently.

Saving that sort of money does make you wonder why Sullivan makes such poor decisions in the transfer window, and why they couldn’t have made more moves on deadline day.
