West Ham and Sunderland surprise emerges over Senne Lammens to Manchester United transfer

West Ham were in a long hunt for new goalkeepers this summer as they looked to tighten up in goal.

Graham Potter’s side again launched a late bid to bring Botafogo’s John Victor to the London Stadium, after their first attempt failed.

Nottingham Forest ended up landing his signature, and they have been forced to settle with Alphonse Areola as their backup.

Mads Hermansen was brought in from Leicester as their new number one for £30million, but the Hammers were also backed to make a move for Senne Lammens.

Belgian journalist expected Senne Lammens to join West Ham or Sunderland

West Ham had been hoping to bring Shea Charles from Sheffield Wednesday to East London this summer, but that move also fell through.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Aston Villa were eyeing moves for Antwerp keeper Lammens.

The former Belgium Under-21 international ended up joining Man United, but West Ham had shown interest in Lammens earlier in the year.

And Axel Brisart, a journalist from Belgian newspaper HLN, said he was surprised Lammers didn’t end up at a club like West Ham rather than Man United.

“Sometimes [Lammens] takes a risk when he comes for a high ball. With more experience he will get better,” he told the BBC.

“He is ready for the Premier League, but we were expecting him to move somewhere like Sunderland or West Ham. But this is a step he wanted to take.”

West Ham will regret not signing a new goalkeeper

Should Hermansen get injured, West Ham are stuck with Areola, a player that Potter is clearly not keen on.

The Hammers got desperate in the transfer window, as they targeted Ivor Pandur from Championship side Hull in the final few days.

David Sullivan’s inability to push for new signings and letting the likes of Charles and Victor slip away won’t be forgotten.

At the moment, with the options the Irons have, it won’t be a surprise to see them get embroiled in a relegation dogfight.
